01 — Nigeria · the recurring sequences

Seven sequences, on repeat.

Nigerian mass violence does not arrive as news. It arrives as a sequence — the same 34 stages, in the same order, in 7 recurring patterns the archive has tracked from 1929 to 2024.

03 — Episodes by decade

Where the record thickens.

Every year cited by every pattern, collapsed into decades. The 2010s and 2020s carry the densest record — partly more violence, partly better documentation.

Impunity Loop

Active · next ~2035
  1. State Shoots Protesters→
  2. Commission Whitewashes→
  3. Zero Prosecutions→
  4. Repeat

Nigeria has never prosecuted a security officer for killing protesters or a perpetrator of a mass ethnic killing. Template unchanged since 1929: Aba (53 killed, no prosecution), Iva Valley (21 killed, no prosecution), Odi (900 killed, no prosecution), Lekki (9–56 killed, panel report suppressed, SARS renamed SWAT).

Economic Shock Cycle

Elevated · next ~2031
  1. Economic Shock→
  2. Youth Protest→
  3. State Crackdown→
  4. Cosmetic Reform→
  5. Repeat

Every 7–9 years, an economic shock triggers mass protest. The state's response is invariant: deny, delay, shoot, rename the offending institution, make a theatrical concession, wait for the cycle to restart. 1945 (COLA), 1978 (Ali Must Go), 1989 (Anti-SAP), 1994 (Oil strike), 2012 (Occupy), 2024 (Hunger Protests). Next predicted: 2030–2033.

Grievance-to-Insurgency Pipeline

Elevated · next ~2030
  1. Peaceful Protest→
  2. State Violence→
  3. Radicalisation→
  4. Armed Insurgency→
  5. Amnesty Without Reform→
  6. Repeat

Ogoni (peaceful) > Saro-Wiwa executed > MEND (armed) > 2009 amnesty > Unknown Gunmen. Boko Haram: political group > Yusuf killed in custody > insurgency. The state creates insurgencies by refusing dialogue and killing leaders. Amnesty without reform produces the next armed group.

Unprosecuted Massacre Cycle

High · next ~2028
  1. Ethnic Massacre→
  2. Zero Accountability→
  3. Larger Massacre→
  4. Potential War

Every major massacre that goes unprosecuted produces a larger one. The 1966 pogroms (30,000 dead, no accountability) produced the Biafra war (2M dead). Jos: each unprosecuted episode authorised the next. Southern Kaduna: same pattern. Nigeria has never successfully prosecuted a single perpetrator of a mass ethnic killing in 60+ years.

Election Crisis Pattern

Imminent · next ~2027
  1. Election→
  2. Rigging/Annulment→
  3. Violence→
  4. Impunity→
  5. Next Election Repeats

No Nigerian election since independence has been universally accepted as free and fair. Every cycle: 1983 (rigging > coup), 1993 (annulment > June 12), 2007 (most violent election), 2011 (post-election riots, 800+ killed in north), 2023 (Lagos violence, naira as suppression tool). 2027 is high-risk.

Climate-Conflict Escalator

Imminent · next ~2027
  1. Climate Pressure + Land Scarcity→
  2. Farmer-Herder→
  3. Ethnic Framing→
  4. National Spread→
  5. Uncontrollable

Farmer-herder conflict was a manageable pastoral dispute in 2001. Climate change drove northern desertification. No land use reform in 60 years. Conflict spread to all 36 states. Religious framing accelerated it. Will intensify with climate change regardless of governance.

Northern Abandonment Cycle

Overdue · next ~2026
  1. Poverty + State Absence + Arms→
  2. Radicalisation→
  3. Insurgency→
  4. Military-Only Response→
  5. Repeat

North-east (Boko Haram) and north-west (banditry) follow identical formulas: 80–90% poverty, illiteracy, no state presence, no economic opportunity, post-Libya arms flood > armed group fills the vacuum. Government response is purely military. No economic investment. Same communities produce the next generation of fighters.

05 — Method

How this is built.

Patterns are an editorial synthesis of The Republic's own protest, massacre and inquiry registers. Each pattern is evidenced by the entries tagged to it; severity is a reading of how recently and how often the sequence has fired, and the next window is a projection from the observed interval — not a forecast.
